Anchors and Dockage

Anchors, Ah the mighty hook that hold us during the night, face all winds and is blamed when it fail to hold. Anchors are designed for specific bottoms, for example mud, sand or weeds. It is difficult to have one type for all situations, so two anchors is the way to go. Along with the might hook, is the quiet spoken chain. The chain actually does most of the work, and yes more is safer. The chain acts as a counter weight to the movement of the vessel. Gravity pulls the chain back to the bottom after every wave and the weight of the chain creates a huge mass which is difficult to move. I would suggest a minimum of 75 feet to 150 feet of chain in your anchor well. The reasoning for the length is the following. You should be at 7 to 1 when anchoring for the night. If you are in 15 feet of water you should have 105 feet of chain out. So if you want to anchor on chain you will need over 100 feet.
